Investigation of fault system growth by distinct element modelling

Duration - 01/10/2006 - 30/09/2008

Funding - Research Frontiers Grant from Science Foundation Ireland.

Brief Outline
This project will examine the initiation and growth of tectonic normal fault systems using high resolution 3D distinct element numerical models incorporating fault localisation, propagation and interaction. This numerical approach, which extends beyond existing fault modelling capabilities, will provide fault system simulations which will be quantitatively compared with, and tested against, both the general characterics of natural fault systems (e.g. displacement distributions, size population scaling, displacement rates), and the actual properties of particular fault systems. The final model results and sensitivity analyses will determine which of the existing conceptual models for fault growth is most appropriate in different geological. circumstances.
