Discrete element modelling of the growth and scaling of joint systems within geological multi-layers

Duration - 01/10/2007 - 30/09/2010

Funding - Research Frontiers Grant from Science Foundation Ireland.

Brief Outline
This project will investigate the processes and factors which control the growth and geometrical properties of joint systems within multi-layered sequences. Using a discrete element modelling approach, the geometry and growth of joint systems will be modelled for sequences of layers with different mechanical properties (e.g. Youngs modulus, Poissons ratio, inter-layer friction) and different stacking patterns. The modelling will be tested against a broad range of geometrical properties of both natural and experimental joint systems and will extend beyond existing analytical or continuum modelling approaches to provide an improved predictive capability for the formation of joint systems.
