Fault Systematics and Development of a Half-Graben

Duration - 1/01/96 - 30/6/97

Funding - Natural Environmental Research Council (ROPA Scheme)

OrthoImages and Digital Elevation Models derived from SPOT data for the Kenya rift area were provided by Elf Geoscience Research Centre.

Summary - Faults and horizons in an existing high quality digital elevation model, derived from remote sensing data, will be quantitatively analysed to determine the geometrical and kinematic systematics of individual faults, of fault arrays and of en echelon and relay ramp structures in a major half-graben spanning the Kenya rift. From these analyses the growth history of the half-graben will be determined and, using data from other half-graben, conclusions will be drawn concerning the growth and structure of half-graben in general.

The picture below shows a 3-D image, taken from ER Mapper, of the Bogoria-Baringo half-graben. The image is looking NE, showing Lake Bogoria and the bounding Bogoria fault.
