Summary - SMACCERS is aimed towards an increased understanding of petroleum migration through fine-grained rock sequences. The project incorporates:
- structural geology and fracture definition;
- mudrock fracture definition;
- geochemical compositional variation and mechanism dependent numerical models of petroleum migration;
- fluid dynamic models to provide a self consistent evaluation of petroleum flow mechanisms in fine-grained rock sequences and on spill-fill-spill migration systems.
The main technical deliverables are;
- an assessment of potential new methods and approaches to secondary migration modelling at reservoir and basin scale;
- a coupled dynamic flow and geochemical compositional model of petroleum transport through mudrocks capable of defining the transport process involved;
- development of new or revised concepts of migration into and leakage from reservoirs;
- an integrated structural, rock fabric, geochemical and modelled synthesis of petroleum migration and remigration in a North Sea case history.
The FAG role in this project is to provide structural expertise. FAG's main activities are;
- structural interpretation and analysis of seismic data from a North Sea case history;
- fault seal analysis to constrain input to petroleum migration modelling;
- assisting in construction of 3-D reservoir models for a North Sea case history;
- examination of structural controls on cap-rock leakage.
