Strike and dip
This model illustrates the basic nomenclature for recording the geometry of planar and linear geological features. The model shows how the orientation of planar features (e.g. bedding) is defined by the strike and dip and how the orientation of linear features (e.g. apparent dip, fold axes etc.) is defined by the plunge direction (trend) and plunge. Using the angles given in this paper model it may be worth deriving a mathematical expression for the apparent dip (beta) as a function of the trend (gamma).
