Outcrop photos of folded layers

This page provides some examples of folded layers. Please refer to the webpage if you use any of these in your lectures.

Loughshinny
This is an excellent example of chevron folding within a limestone-shale interbedded sequence, Loughshinny, North Dublin, Ireland. Notice that the limbs of the folds are straight.

Box fold
A beautiful box fold within greywackes at Clogherhead, north of Dublin (photo by H.P. Steyrer). Notice the development of a fanning cleavage!

Loughshinny
This is a beautiful example of a plunging fold (the fold is plunging towards you) from Loughshinny, North Dublin, Ireland. Also notice that the fold hinge exhibits a bend, stepping to the right.
